Quilt Border Tutorial.

First of all, Meggie! The borders on this quilt will be hot pink and black, my recipients favourite colours.
The binding is on, just have to sew the front which I will do by hand this afternoon.
I thought I might like to share with you how I do it. For this particular quilt I needed to add to the sides a total of 6 inches to make it the correct size. This meant a border of 3 inches on each side.So the main fabric is going to be 7 inches. (1 inch added for the seam allowance) as we are doing the back and the front at the same time.
Place the 3 inch batting down the centre of the main border fabric and fold it over.
On the top side add the 2 inch strip of fabric folded with the raw edges facing the raw edges of the main fabric
This is the bottom side, the one inch strip of fabric pinned in place.
1/4 inch seam, sew all the layers together.
Now you are going to add the main quilt. Matching the raw edge of the back of the quilt to the 1 inch strip of fabric sew a 1/4 inch.
Flip the quilt so that the quilt top is now uppermost and fold the 2 inch strip over to be on top of the quilt sandwiching all the raw edges inside.
Pin and sew either by hand or by machine. Square up the ends and then you are ready to measure the top and bottom of the quilt to make that border fit the size of quilt you are making.
Done.

Netball Fabric Arrived!

My friend Gina sent to me this lovely netball fabric and kitty card. How lovely!
 Tilli approved!
This is what I have done with it. I fussy cut the players out, Vliesofixed and appliqued them onto the other side of the quilt. Loving it!
Thank you Gina The story of the fabric will go into the card too.

Quilt Block Assembly.

As I made the blocks and put them into rows I numbered them. Sewing them into groups of 4 and then sewing them row by row. I am enjoying the creativity. Some of the solid coffee fabric is being fussy cut and added to some of the plain blocks for more colour punch and will help tie in the colours better. The back is all solid blocks and will have the netball stuff on them. Quite how it will look when it is finished I do not know at the moment as it is evolving as I go along. I do know however that it will have boarders and one purple block. That block is my cup of coffee that I will explain that in her card. I am having a lot of fun with this.

Sample of blocks.

This is a sample of the blocks I have made today. Some will make it to the quilt as I get more done and editing will happen. White sashings will be added.

Quilting, Shopping And Makes.

I have changed how I am going to make the quilt, I will be using a block from the previous post, making some appliques, doing some stenciling with stitches
Using the colours in the backs too. Look at this lovely fabric I bought from Spotlight! Perfect all coffee. I am very excited about the netball fabric I have been promised to add to this quilt too.
The eyes came from a purchase from ebay to go with the noses I bought from the same place last year when they were on special. (400 pairs for $35). Now I am ready to make toys too.
Last but not least, This is what I bought from the Craft show yesterday, Wool felt from Ric-Rac, http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com.au/ (I had my hug from Jodie!) I gave a gift of a vintage sheet to the Crafty Squirrel too, http://thecraftysquirrelshop.blogspot.com.au/ I bought this book from this place, http://aktraditions.blogspot.com.au/  I have made the knitted dress and beret from the book already last night. I am looking forward to making toys very very soon.
I had a very wonderful day yesterday.
